What Causes Hair Loss?
Hair loss is a normal occurrence in both men and women of all nationalities. Most people shed 50 to 100 hairs per day on a normal basis. While 100 hairs sound like a substantial amount to lose every day, it typically does not cause noticeable thinning of the hair because new hair is growing in at the same time. However, hair loss is an issue for many people, particularly mature men, when the hair follicles are no longer productive and hairs that are lost are no longer being replaced.
Hair loss in men is directly associated with aging, but there are also other causes of hair loss that affect both genders and people of all ages. Heredity is a direct cause in both men and women called male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness. Heredity will affect the age at which people lose their hair, and it will predict the extent of hair loss.
Hormonal changes are also the main cause of hair loss. Hormonal changes and imbalances can cause hair loss, which is more typical in women during pregnancy, after giving birth, and with the onset of menopause. Conditions with the thyroid gland also affect hormone levels; therefore, thyroid problems can be linked with hair loss.
Certain medications are also known to cause hair loss. Drugs used to treat cancer (with the most well known being drugs in chemotherapy), arthritis, depression, high blood pressure, heart problems, and birth control can all be linked with certain serious side effects – hair loss being one of them.
Other causes of hair loss include trauma, scalp infections, skin disorders, hair pulling disorder, and certain repeated hairstyles and hair treatments.
