Follicular Unit Extraction
Hair transplant surgery is typically performed using one of two methods, the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and the Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT). The primary difference between these two techniques is in the type of incision that is involved for the patient. The FUE is typically the most favored technique for a hair transplant as it avoids unsightly linear scarring from strip methods. The Follicular Unit Extraction is a method of extracting hair from the donor area without an incision. With the lack of an incision, the discomfort from a hair transplant is greatly diminished from an FUE.
Follicular Unit Extraction is a method of harvesting donor hair for a natural looking hair transplant. During FUE hair transplant surgery, a small, circular incision is made in the skin around a follicular unit, separating it from the surrounding tissue. The unit is then pulled directly from the scalp, harvesting the hair, for transplant. This process is repeated until enough hair follicular units have been extracted for the planned hair restoration. This is a lengthy process because it requires surgeons to be precise and take time to choose follicular units that are ample and most desirable. Tiny holes will be left in the scalp but will heal over the course of two weeks. It is this method of donor harvesting that differentiates the FUE technique from the FUT.
FUE Hair Transplant System
Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplant system involves very small, discreet incisions that are dispersed throughout the donor area. This entire technique is designed with discretion as the main goal in transplanting hair. Not only are the follicular units discreetly extracted, but because they are individually placed in specific areas, they also blend in naturally to create a fuller more ample head of hair.
In most cases, patients prefer the FUE method because it allows for a more efficient procedure that produces faster results with less detectable scars. It is important for patients to keep in mind that even after a hair transplant, the other hair will continue to thin out over time. By keeping this in the forefront, patients often see the FUE technique as superior to the FUT because as hair changes with age, the scars are much less likely to ever be detected.
