Hair Transplant FAQs
- What is Hair Transplantation?
Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure to restore the loss of thinning hair. During the procedure hair is harvested from the back and/or sides of the scalp where there is substantial hair growth and is then transplanted in the selected area of thinning or balding. Once the hair has been transplanted, it will continue to grow for a person's lifetime. At Park Avenue Hair Transplant, Dr. Maurice Khosh performs the two most effective types of hair transplantation, Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
- What is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method of extracting singular follicular units directly from the scalp. A specialized instrument is used to make small, circular incisions in the skin around follicular units, separating them from the surrounding tissue. The follicular unit is then extracted directly from the scalp, leaving on a small open hole in the scalp that heals quickly.
This method of donor harvesting is considered to be the most advanced technique because it is efficient in removing the hair follicles necessary for transplant, but it also leaves minimal scarring that is almost undetectable even on men who keep their hair cut very short. In most situations Dr. Khosh of Park Avenue Hair Transplant performs the favored FUE hair transplant technique to achieve the most optimal patient results.
- What is Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT)?
A Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) is a hair restoration procedure in which a thin strip of tissue from a donor area is removed and then separated into hundreds or thousands of individual follicular units. These follicular units are then surgically inserted into the recipient site in order to create a fuller head of hair. Obtaining a larger section of the scalp does leave a linear scar in the donor area and precludes patients from wearing their hair cut very short. However, FUT yields a larger amount of donor hair than the FUE, and is thus considered a better option for those who have greater hair loss that they wish to restore.
Dr. Maurice Khosh is exceptionally skilled in the FUT hair transplant technique, and he will help patients make the best decision regarding which type of hair restoration method is best suited for their goals. Each patient is treated on an individual basis because there is no one size fits all approach to create the look that best suits you.
- What Does a Hair Transplant Cost?
While there is no set price for a hair transplant, it is safe to assume that patients will spend $4,000 to $15,000 on the procedure. The cost is based upon how large of an area patients wish to have restored, how many hair grafts will be necessary to make the restoration, and which hair transplant technique is chosen. Insurance rarely covers the cost of a hair transplant because it is considered to be a strictly cosmetic procedure that is not necessary for the promotion of health.
Please contact Park Avenue Hair Transplant to schedule a consultation appointment where the cost for your hair transplant can discussed once a general sense of the number of grafts you would need is determined.
- How long is the recovery time?
As surprising as it may sound, the recovery time for a hair transplant is typically only seven to ten days. There is some tenderness, swelling, and crusting after the procedure, but a hair transplant procedure is usually undetectable after ten days. Follicular unit grafts are considered to be permanent hair once they have been in the scalp for ten days.
